Beyond the datasheet: Does your CCTV system need an NVR?

October 19th, 2017 by Network Webcams

Recording and Storage options for your CCTV systemWhen it comes to the storage of your video surveillance footage, a common assumption is that to do this job successfully, a network video recorder (NVR) is required.

Back in the early days of IP, NVR’s provided a familiar and straightforward storage solution for users moving away from their analogue DVR’s towards a digital CCTV system. Although it is still clear that NVR’s have a place in the market, constant developments in IP technology have resulted in alternative options to help meet a wider range of requirements and applications.

With this in mind, we decided to take a look at some of the options available when choosing a suitable recording and storage solution for your CCTV system.

How can you make your CCTV system greener?

June 8th, 2017 by Network Webcams

Helpful tips on making your CCTV system greenerIn a recent blog we explored how easy it was to find the green credentials of the major IP camera brands we supply, in an aim to see “how green your IP camera really is”. It’s clear that most manufacturers are continuously looking at ways that they can be “greener” – from the materials they use through to their transportation options, but the end-user can make a difference too.

Recognising the impact your CCTV system can have on the environment is a challenge for everyone, but it’s worth remembering the additional benefit of reducing the energy consumption of your video surveillance system is a potential saving for your organisation.

Securing remote access in Milestone XProtect Essential and Express

May 24th, 2017 by Network Webcams

Milestone XProtect Essential and XProtect ExpressMilestone has changed their practice of using a default user and password in their entry-level XProtect products, Essential and Express.

This is in response to a security vulnerability that relates to customers who have enabled remote access via the mobile server on these variants of their video management system (VMS) software.

This issue only affects:

  • XProtect Essential 2.0a to 2017 R1
  • XProtect Express 1.0a to 2017 R1

No versions of Expert or Corporate are affected and none of the Husky NVRs are affected either. Professional and Enterprise (now discontinued) are only affected if they were upgraded from the entry-level products noted above.

XProtect Essential upgrade offerThis September, Milestone announced that starting from the 10th October 2016, Milestone XProtect Go was to be replaced by Milestone Essential as Milestone’s free VMS. Milestone Essential v Express

November 24th, 2016 by Network Webcams

Milestone XProtect Essential and ExpressOn October 10th this year, Milestone replaced XProtect Go with XProtect Essential as their free Video Management Software (VMS) option for entry-level users.

Ahead of this change, we posed the question “What’s the real cost of making Milestone Essential free?” in a blog post that highlighted the known limitations of the newly positioned product. It was clear even back then that it would actually make more sense for many users to use Milestone Express rather than Essential but, the real difference in cost was still unknown.

What’s the real cost of making Milestone Essential free?

September 15th, 2016 by Network Webcams

Milestone XProtect Essential and ExpressMilestone has worked hard to nurture XProtect into a mature and comprehensive Video Management Software (VMS) suite and this year they’ve been pruning their offering to promote further growth. We’ve seen the phasing out of Milestone Enterprise and now a further trim has been announced.

Starting October 10th 2016 – Milestone XProtect Go, the free VMS product will be discontinued and Milestone Essential will take its place as Milestone’s free VMS. When this happens, Milestone Express will take up its position as the entry-level product in the “paid-for” software suite.

These changes make sense in many ways and bring distinct benefits for many entry-level users, but unsurprisingly, there will be some limitations in the newly positioned Milestone Essential. It’s these limitations that need careful consideration and based on what we’ve learned so far, it appears that for many users, it may actually make more sense to use Milestone Express.
