As threats to front line staff working in public facing sectors become increasingly prevalent and more serious, the integration of sound detection technology with CCTV video surveillance can play a crucial role. The combination of audio and visual sensors allows network cameras to hear as well as see, enabling immediate warnings of potential threats even if the incident happens out of a camera’s view.
This additional layer of safety can prove essential for rapid and proactive incident response, improving safety and security in various business sectors such as A&E departments, retail shops, schools, public transport, lone working environments and many more.
We decided to explore how this solution can be effectively implemented by testing the Axis M3086-V Mic variant, a camera with the same visual functionality as the successful Axis M3086-V indoor dome camera , now featuring a built-in microphone and Axis Audio Analytics.
What is Axis Audio Analytics?
Axis Audio Analytics is an AI-based application that sits within some Axis IP cameras, capable of triggering alerts when loud sounds are detected in the scene. Captured sounds are processed on the edge using trained algorithms to rapidly classify certain audio types such as screams and shouts, with scope for a range of other sound types as the technology develops further.
Put to the test
We integrated the camera into Milestone VMS easily using the Axis Optimiser plug-in and set it up in our busy office. We found that the Axis M3086-V Mic picked up sudden volume spikes almost immediately, and the sound classification worked consistently with low false alarm rates for screams by both male and female voices. We found more false alarms with the shouting classification however, but this did not detract from the overall performance of the device when it came to issuing reliable sound alerts.
How can Axis Audio Analytics enhance people’s safety?
Let’s explore some practical examples and typical use cases for this evolving technology.

Identify raised voices & verbal aggression
Set alerts in your video management system (VMS) to highlight the relevant camera views when raised voices or shouting are detected, enabling swift intervention by security personnel. Minimise escalation of threatening situations to help keep staff safe from further abuse and potential dangers.

Detect cries for help
Individuals in trouble or in lone working scenarios can prompt security operators or managers to respond rapidly to those in potential danger. A shout or scream can raise the alert for someone to take action and manage the further impact of the situation.

Restricted area access
Set cameras to start audio recording upon detection of an unusual sound, capturing a more comprehensive perspective on security incidents and ascertain the threat level by distinguishing between normal sounds and sounds that would indicate potential safety or security breaches.
Could Axis Audio Analytics enhance the safety and security of your people?
The M3086-V Mic smart camera with Axis Audio Analytics can deliver better protection of your staff, utilising both visual and audio sensors that when combined create the eyes and ears that can help keep your people safer in many day-to-day situations.
