Beyond the Datasheet: Our top IP camera contenders for 2018

Looking back over 2017, we saw continuous growth of the IP camera market with the introduction of new product ranges and interesting technologies. Industry leaders Axis released their first ever, innovatively designed, ‘true’ outdoor-ready CS-mount IP camera and also brought the best-selling M31 Series to the table. Meanwhile, Samsung Wisenet’s P, Q and X ranges were introduced to Network Webcams and we saw Bosch’s new ‘intelligent’ range of IP cameras which feature edge-based, IVA and Essential video analytics. It was also a big year in terms of software, with Milestone releasing two new ‘business-ready’ XProtect products: XProtect Express+ and Professional+. Both of which provide access to a host of advanced Milestone features and allow you to take full advantage of the latest in IP camera technology.

With an abundance of IP cameras available, it can often be a daunting task to choose the right model for your needs. To make things a little easier, we decided to highlight some of the units which we feel could be popular ‘go-to’ choices this year.

Great for: wide area surveillance

Designed to give you great bang for your buck, Axis’ outdoor-ready M5525-E is an attractively priced PTZ unit which offers endless 360° panning and a 10x optical zoom for in-depth examination into regions of interest. With Full HD 1080p capability, WDR – Forensic Capture technology and a variety of scene profiles for automatic optimisation – this unit provides a versatile choice for any wide indoor or outdoor location. Part of the affordable ‘M’ Series, the unit’s high-performance feature set is that of what you would expect to see in Axis’ professional ‘P’ or ‘Q’ ranges. This welcome addition of features gives you the ‘best of both worlds’, allowing you to make the most of proven Axis technologies for a reasonable price.

Great for: high-performance CCTV in exposed locations

One of Axis’ next generation P33 Series, the P3375-VE is a robust dome that is jam-packed with features and delivers HD 1080p resolution at a high frame rate of up to 50 frames per second (fps). The unit also combines advanced imaging technologies such as WDR – Forensic Capture and Lightfinder to capture detailed video footage – even in challenging lighting conditions. Plus, when you take into account its IP66 and IK10-rated housing, varifocal lens with remote focus, two-way audio support and alarm I/O ports – it’s easy to see why we feel this IP camera’s comprehensive feature-set makes it a top choice for any exposed location.

Introduced to Network Webcams back in the Summer of 2017, Samsung Wisenet is a relatively new player in the market offering video surveillance solutions for every budget. Part of their entry-level Q Series, the QNO-7080R outdoor-ready bullet IP camera delivers 4MP resolution round-the-clock and includes a range of features such as up to 30m IR and a varifocal lens. These, combined with handy extras such as MicroSD card recording and Samsung Wisenet’s own compression technology ‘WiseStream’, help to make this IP camera a good ‘all-round’ choice at a competitive price point.
