QNAP launches VMobile app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

QNAP has launched its VMobile app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

With the app, users can monitor a live stream and playback recordings from an unlimited number of servers and channels. “This is a unique feature that no other applications offer currently except VMobile,” said Andrew Yu, QNAP Product Manager. Feeds from multiple cameras and from different brands can be viewed through the app as long as the cameras are connected to a VioStor NVR, making this a flexible solution for installations that have had incremental upgrades, or for users that need to keep track of different installations in multiple locations.

Other features include the ability to control display modes (such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9-channel display mode and sequential display mode), PTZ, preset positions and video snapshots. Users can playback any recordings stored on the device, and can search through recordings by date and time.

The application will also notify you of any alarm events in real-time. With this feature, users can ascertain the precise location of any activity almost immediately, viewing saved images or recordings directly on the device straight after they have occurred. It is this kind of instant access and retrieval that makes mobile applications appealing to many users, and offering an app that works on a device they are likely to be carrying around anyway makes a lot of sense.

VMobile is QNAP’s second foray into mobile touch applications following on from the consumer-oriented QMobile app for its NAS devices. VMobile joins apps from other manufacturers such as Axis and Y-cam on the iTunes App Store. The new generation of all-screen mobile touch devices, led by Apple and Google, lend themselves well to mobile monitoring applications, and with QNAP, Axis and Y-cam crafting surefooted first-generation apps, this technology is rapidly becoming an important access point for surveillance and security. We’re intrigued to see what they come up with in their second-generation software and whether any of their contemporaries will be joining them.

The app is designed to work with QNAP’s VioStor NVRs (firmware v. 3.3.0 or higher). All setup and configuration is done through the mobile device.

The VMobile App is now available as a free download from iTunes.
