Panasonic BL-C101 & BL-C121 Key Features Announced

Panasonic BL-C101 Mini wireless IP security camera Panasonic have announced details of 2 new cameras which will supersede their BL-C1 and BL-C20 home security/pet cams.

The BL-C101 and BL-C121 have the same overall appearance as the previous models.  They retain the stylish design of their predecessors and still sport a sleek white finish enabling them to be positioned in any contemporary home or office space without standing out.  The antenna for the wireless model (BL-C121) has been also removed and positioned internally to give a better, less obtrusive finish.

We’re not just interested in their looks though, they also have more features to offer than the previous models.

Here is a list of the key upgrades:

  • MPEG-4 support: The cameras support MPEG-4 video compression enabling them to deliver fast moving live video at up to 30fps at full resolution.  Thay are also dual-streaming so both a MJPEG and a MPEG-4 stream can run concurrently using independent image settings.
  • Full Screen mode: Each camera has a full-screen mode which enlarges the live image to the size of your screen allowing for more efficient monitoring.
  • 1-way Audio: The new models now support 1-way audio using a built-in microphone.  This allows you to not only view live images from the camera but also listen-in to sounds coming from the camera’s location.
  • External Input Connector: Another addition is a 2-pin input connector which enables an external sensor or switch to connect to the camera to act as an external alarm trigger increasing the number of applications the camera can provide.
  • Detection Notification Sound: When you are monitoring the live images from a computer you can set the camera to play an audible sound through the computer speakers when it detects movement.
  • SSL Support: The camera can send its images and data using SSL encryption across the network for greater security.  Encrypting the data makes it much more difficult for someone to intercept and view the data while it was travelling along the network.
  • IPv6 Support: To future-proof the camera it supports the latest protocol IPv6 as well as support for IPv4.  Probably not required right now, but will be handy to have as we migrate to IPv6 addresses in the future.

We will conduct a full evaluation on the new products when they become available, which we estimate to be sometime around the end of March 2009.
