Overview of the Axis Occupancy Estimator application

This product is discontinued, an alternative model is the Axis People Counter

  • Accurately estimate occupancy levels on premises
  • Compatible with a wide range of Axis IP cameras
  • View real-time people counting data
  • Can be used with CamStreamer SOM App for reactive management of occupancy levels
  • E-licence - one licence per camera

The Axis Occupancy Estimator application utilises people counting technology to keep track of how many people are currently occupying a defined space. Ideal for use in indoor spaces with lots of foot traffic, such as retail stores, bars and museums; the app allows users to gain a stronger understanding of how visitors use their space – helping them to enhance visitor experience and increase operational efficiency. Run ‘on the edge’ of an Axis IP camera to provide real-time people counting data, the application can also be used with the CamStreamer Store Occupancy Manager (SOM) App for reactive management when maximum occupancy level is exceeded.

Application

Axis Occupancy Estimator is an edge-based application for use with Axis IP cameras that enables users to measure real-time occupancy levels on their premises - helping them to better understand visitor patterns and how the space is used. Such valuable data can be used to inform decision-making for more efficient planning of operations, such as the allocation of bar staff to different areas during peak times. With this smart app, users can analyse individual sites or quickly compare performance across different locations to enable them to take the appropriate action to improve business – ideal in fast food chains where performance can vary greatly across each branch. The app can also be integrated with a building management system to help optimise HVAC system usage and reduce energy consumption; presenting cost-saving opportunities in retail stores or even in large office buildings.

Functionality

The intelligent application keeps track of how many people are currently occupying a defined area and is capable of delivering the average amount of time spent in that area. It can also analyse the frequency of passages to calculate an average visit time which is then used to filter out errors accumulated during the day. In order to provide this algorithm with enough data, there needs to be a high flow of people during a single day – meaning the app is best suited to areas with high levels of foot traffic. Where multiple cameras are used as part of the installation, they communicate with each other in a ‘master-slave’ concept in order to keep track of the current value. The master camera continuously fetches data from the slave cameras and presents that data in the live view to show the occupancy as well as the average time value. Two operating modes are also available that provide different levels of functionality to best suit user requirements. In ‘Smart Mode,’ the app analyses the frequency of passages and is able to calculate an average visit time which is then used to filter out error accumulated throughout the day. In this mode the app outputs an estimated occupancy and average visit time at any given time, as well as a corrected full-day analysis at the end of the day. ‘Naïve Mode’ provides a simpler solution; presenting the people entering minus the people exiting and allowing users to reset the occupancy at any desired time of day. In addition, Axis Occupancy Estimator stores information directly on each installed camera, reducing bandwidth and storage requirements. Data is saved for up to 90 days and the application can be configured, managed and monitored remotely - meaning users can view statistics from several cameras and locations simultaneously.

Integration

For locations with multiple entrances and exits, a camera running Occupancy Estimator should be mounted at each entrance/exit. In order to achieve optimum performance, it is advisable that cameras be mounted directly above the point where people pass, facing straight down in line with the ceiling and at a minimum height of 2.7m. Data collected through the application is accessible in a number of ways: by using the camera’s web interface, by downloading static raw data through an open API in the camera or through other Axis store optimisation applications. In addition, the app’s open protocol enables integration of data with other third-party applications, as well as other Axis store optimisation applications, such as Axis Store Reporter and Axis Store Data Manager.

Please note: a single Occupancy Estimator licence is required per Axis IP camera.
